MTC - Times Tables

The Multiplication Tables Check (MTC) is a statutory assessment for all Year 4 pupils in England. It helps schools understand how confidently children can recall their times tables up to 12×12, a skill that underpins much of the maths they’ll encounter in later years.

What the MTC Is

The check is a short, online assessment designed to measure how fluently children can recall multiplication facts.

  • Children answer 25 questions on a computer or tablet.

  • They get 6 seconds per question, with 3 practice questions beforehand.

  • The whole check takes around 5 minutes.

  • It is not a pass-or-fail test; it simply identifies where extra support may help.

Why the MTC Matters

Strong times tables knowledge is essential for:

  • Confident mental arithmetic

  • Understanding fractions, division, and more complex maths

  • Reducing cognitive load so children can focus on problem-solving

  • Building a secure foundation for Key Stage 2 and secondary maths

The check helps teachers see which pupils may need additional support and ensures learning gaps are addressed early.

When the Check Takes Place

Schools administer the MTC during a set two‑week window in June each year. Children do not all take it at the same time; schools can choose the day and time within the window.

Access Arrangements

The MTC is designed to be inclusive and accessible.

  • Support is available for pupils with SEND or English as an additional language.

  • Teachers decide which arrangements are appropriate.

  • In rare cases, a pupil may be exempt if the check is not suitable.

If you have concerns about your child’s access needs, speaking with their teacher is the best first step.

How Results Are Used

  • Schools receive each child’s score.

  • Teachers share the score with parents.

  • There is no pass mark.

  • Results help identify pupils who may benefit from extra support.
